Varroa mites are a relentless threat to honeybee colonies, and beekeepers constantly struggle to find effective treatments.

Among the various treatment options, oxalic acid has emerged as a precious tool in the fight against these pests.

One of its greatest strengths is that, unlike many other chemical treatments, Varroa mites have not developed resistance to oxalic acid (at least, not yet).

Why Oxalic Acid Remains Effective

The main advantage of oxalic acid is its continued effectiveness against Varroa mites.

Unlike treatments that mites eventually adapt to, oxalic acid has consistently managed to keep mite populations under control.

This is especially important when other treatments are losing their effectiveness due to resistance buildup.

Oxalic acid targets mites on adult bees, making it particularly effective in late autumn, when brood is minimal.

Using Oxalic Acid Properly

Oxalic acid can be applied through dribbling or vaporization.

However, its effectiveness depends on correct application and timing.

It works best when there is little to no brood present, as this allows the acid to target a larger proportion of the mites.

During times when brood is abundant, mites can hide within the cells, making it harder for treatments to reach them.

Safety Considerations

While oxalic acid is a powerful ally, it should be used responsibly.

Incorrect dosages can harm your bees, so it’s crucial to follow the recommended guidelines for application.

Overuse of any treatment can also lead to reduced efficacy over time and potential harm to your colonies while giving a chance for mites to adapt.

The Future of Oxalic Acid

The fact that Varroa mites haven’t yet developed resistance to oxalic acid is promising, but it also comes with a warning: beekeepers must use it carefully to preserve its effectiveness.

By rotating treatments and only using oxalic acid when needed, we can help ensure that it remains an effective tool for as long as possible.
